Overview
Patient Safety Day takes place annually on the 17th of September and this year’s theme as announced by the World Health Organisation is “Engaging Patients for Patient Safety” through the slogan “Elevate the voice of patients”.
Patient safety refers to the implementation of measures and practices to prevent harm and adverse events during healthcare delivery. It encompasses a range of strategies aimed at ensuring that patients receive safe, effective, and high-quality care. Patient safety focuses on minimising medical errors, infections, and other preventable complications that could negatively impact patients’ well-being.
Key aspects of patient safety include preventing medical errors, controlling infections, promoting effective communication and teamwork among healthcare providers, engaging patients in their care, and continuously improving healthcare processes through regular evaluation and learning from mistakes. It is a shared responsibility among healthcare professionals, administrators, policymakers, and patients themselves. By prioritising patient safety, healthcare systems strive to provide a secure environment for patients, enhance the quality of care, and ultimately, improve health outcomes.
The impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on patient safety is profound and far-reaching. AMR occurs when microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, develop resistance to the drugs designed to treat them. As a result, infections become increasingly difficult to manage, leading to a heightened risk of complications and mortality. For patient safety, AMR poses several critical challenges. First, patients who have contracted an infection that is resistant to antimicrobials have limited treatment options, which can lead to prolonged illnesses and increased healthcare costs. Second, healthcare providers may face difficulty in accurately diagnosing infections and prescribing effective antibiotics, leading to delayed or inappropriate treatments.
AMR also poses a risk in healthcare settings, where vulnerable patients, such as those undergoing surgeries or with weakened immune systems, are susceptible to infections caused by resistant pathogens. Hospital-acquired infections due to AMR can lead to longer hospital stays, higher healthcare expenditures, and poorer patient outcomes. Moreover, the emergence of AMR strains undermines the efficacy of standard antibiotic regimens, necessitating the use of more potent and expensive drugs. This escalating issue not only burdens healthcare systems but also threatens the global availability of effective antibiotics, risking a return to a pre-antibiotic era where even minor infections could become life-threatening.

T1: How would you describe Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?
T2: How would you describe Patient Safety?
T3: How does Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) impact patient safety?
T4: What role does patient engagement have in relation to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and patient safety?
T5: What role do health providers have in promoting patient engagement around Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in relation to patient safety?
CT: Any thoughts you would like to add about the role of patient safety and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?
